Entheome Station 1
September 7th - 12th 2023
Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico
Enthome- The Entheogen Genome Project- is a not-for-profit initiative to build an open-access biobank of all entheogenic flora, fauna and funga from around the globe. As part of our mission, we cordially invite you to our second research summit, STATION 1.
This event entails a 5-night *most expenses included* excursion to Mexico. Airfare and travel to/from the airport is not included. This event has a maximum capacity of 20 attendees in indoor hotel-style rooms.
Our days will be filled with a combination of workshops, field work (foraging, microscopy, DNA barcoding, and more), and personal time for socializing, temazcal or exploring the region. The schedule is flexible and level of participation in all events is voluntary.
What to Expect
The aim of this trip is to invite the research community to join Entheome on a journey of discovery into the mountains around Veracruz. Please only apply for this opportunity if you are already involved in community science endeavors, as you should expect to participate in community science activities on a daily basis. This is the rainy season in Veracruz. We know it will rain. There will be lots of mushrooms. We will also be inviting local Mycologists to speak to our group, as well as other Entheome faculty. There will be an identification table set up, and some of the fungi will be collected for DNA barcoding. The cost of your ticket will include a donation toward FULL GENOME SEQUENCING of at least one of the mushrooms found on this trip.
Participants will stay at an eco hotel in Coatepec, Veracruz, MX. Accommodations include bathrooms with hot showers and free toiletries, a pool for outdoor swimming, and trails that lead directly into the rainforest. All rooms include a wardrobe, a refrigerator, bedding, wifi, a coffee maker, and a patio with mountain views. Some rooms have kitchens, although guests will not have to worry about cooking because all meals will be included in the cost of your stay.
The resort is about 4 hours drive from Mexico City International Airport (MEX), or 2 hours drive from Veracruz International Airport (VER). As a courtesy, Mandie and Victor will be attempting to coordinate ride shares from the airport/s to the eco hotel. Daily Forays will depart from the property via rental vans that will be included in the cost of the trip. Many fungi in this location have the potential to be species that are currently undescribed by taxonomists. Schedules are subject to change, depending on factors such as weather conditions and workshop leader discretion.
*Please note that the cost of this trip includes meals and lodging in Coatepec, as well as forays, lectures and workshops. It does not include ground transportation to & from the airport to the eco hotel. Personal souvenirs, and optional activities are not included. We will have a basic first aid kit with us for our adventures (Benadryl, Aspirin, etc.), but if you require anything specific, please be prepared to bring it with you, as the pharmacies may not have what you need.
We would like to reiterate that airfare is not included. Once your attendance is confirmed and you have paid, please make travel arrangements as soon as possible to be able to join us.
*TO PAY FOR THIS EVENT DO NOT USE THIS WEBSITE - YOU MUST MAKE A DONATION TO THE ENTHEOME FOUNDATION ON PAYPAL AT hello@entheome.org FOR THE FULL COST OF THE EVENT $1500
