Rainforest Foray Series: Mexico
Join Alan Rockefeller on a foray in a region of Mexico where he has been exploring and photographing the mushroom diversity for over 15 years. This trip will be an interactive learning experience that is specially tailored to each participant and their skill set. What mycology skills do you want to learn? Photography? Identification? Microscopy? DNA Barcoding? Let us know.
The cloud forests surrounding Xalapa have incredible fungal and plant diversity, and this region hosts more bioluminescent mushrooms than anywhere else on Earth. Fluorescent mushrooms are also abundant so bring your UV flashlight, or borrow one of Alan’s, to experience the cloud forest at night like never before.
The cost of this trip includes a local guide, we have chosen a truly amazing human who knows the area and will plan our forays. This is the rainy season in Veracruz, we know it will rain and there will be lots of mushrooms. We will also be inviting local mycologists to speak to our group and there will be an identification table set up in order to better understand and identify our finds.
There are only 10 tickets available for this event, our goal is to create a small group experience in a gorgeous rainforest setting. Days will consist of mushroom photography and exploration of the local ecosystems. At least one foray will consist of a drive up the side of a volcano. All food is included, chefs will cook meals and bagged lunches will be available during full-day forays.
Lodging is about 4 hours drive from Mexico City International Airport (MEX), or 2 hours drive from Veracruz International Airport (VER). As a courtesy, Mandie will be coordinating ride shares from the airport/s to the eco hotel. Forays will depart from the property via rental cars that will be included in the cost of the trip. Many fungi in this location have the potential to be species that are unknown to science. Schedules are subject to change, depending on factors such as weather conditions and workshop leader discretion.
Please note that the cost of this trip is non-refundable (unless you find someone to take your place) and includes delicious meals and lodging, as well as forays, lectures, workshops, and transportation to the foray sites. It does not include ground transportation to & from the airport. Personal souvenirs, and optional activities are also not included. We will have a basic first aid kit with us for our adventures (Benadryl, Aspirin, etc.), but if you require anything specific, please be prepared to bring it with you.
This Foray is hosted by mycena LLC and organized by Mandie Quark.
